Johnson Creek Airport (3U2) - Yellow Pine, Idaho

Johnson Creek is likely the most popular airport for Idaho back-country pilots.  The airport managers are constantly grooming the lush green grass on the runway and a beautiful stream is within a few yards of the tie-down area.

Amenities:  The airport managers bend over backwards to make the pilots happy with hot showers and bathroom facilities close to the camping area.  I have no problem heating up a pot of water for daily bathing, but a nice hot shower is such a treat when attempting to wash long thick hair.

I believe the best kept secret in Johnson Creek is an old metal tub, located on the top of hill, about an hour walk through the forest.  A mystery hose continuously fills it with warm water from the local hot springs.  Like two spoiled women at a day spa, Cheri (my camping buddy and close friend) and I lounged in our private hot tub in the middle of the forest watching birds circle their prey and pondering the meaning of life.

The following day, we rented the airport car and ventured into the nearest town which has a store and a couple of bars.  The town is nice, but the real treat was the drive.  The road runs along the river teasing you with peeks of sunlight streaming though the pines and an ambiance with the depth and mood of an Ansel Adams photo.
